The U.S. Census Bureau released 2016 population estimates for the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) of metro Atlanta last week – revealing a new estimated MSA population of 5,789,700. Atlanta remains the ninth largest metro area in the nation.

Atlanta’s population change amounted to an increase of 90,650 people. Atlanta ranks fourth behind Dallas, Houston and Phoenix in the nation for numeric change in population for a metro area.

Atlanta’s strength as a leading destination for businesses – startups and international companies included – sets the city apart for people seeking to move to the metro area. The city is also a great place for millennials and families who are attracted to the rich culture and national sporting events taking place throughout the year that can only be found in Atlanta.

The Census Bureau estimates that net migration in the MSA is 54,441, representing the difference between in-migration and out-migration. About 67 percent of the net migration was domestic and 33 percent international; the positive number means that more people moved into Atlanta from within the U.S. and abroad than moved out – unlike Chicago, New York and LA, all with negative net migration numbers.
