Georgia State Senator Brandon Beach (R-Alpharetta) this week has been explaining to civic groups and fellow legislators why multiple transit options are important to the region’s economic competitiveness. Corporate prospects often require access to transit as a condition of their relocation, as do the millennials they are seeking to recruit.
Meantime, a North Carolina state senator today offered his critique of Atlanta, while making a case for why Charlotte, his hometown, should expand its transit options. His open letter titled, “How not to become Atlanta,” was published by the local news site Charlotteagenda.com. In an open letter, Senator Jeff Jackson (D-Mecklenburg County, NC), says “the failure to extend Atlanta’s mass transit rail network into the suburbs has been called ‘the mother of all mistakes’ and ‘the single worst mistake in a whole cluster bomb of missteps.'”
He also states that “Atlanta is now widely acknowledged to have made serious mistakes during its period of hyper-growth that began in the 1980s” and “Charlotte’s growth is only accelerating. What cautionary tales can we learn from our metropolitan neighbor to the south?”
