N.C.’s Pre-K Program has proven to have long term positive results for 3rd grade learners. Studies show that students taking part in the program have out-performed most students who do not attend. The program targets 4-year-olds, and addresses students that qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many of the student who participate in the program perform on par with peers that come from higher income family backgrounds.
"Researchers with the institute have been studying the program since it began. They found that students who attended scored higher on end-of-grade tests in reading and math in 3rd grade than students from low-income families who had not attended. And, when compared to all students, these students scored closer to their more affluent peers."
