Chaired by Chris Huff, vice president of mobile and consumer app development at The Weather Channel, the Metro Atlanta Chamber’s IoT/Mobile Leadership Council focuses on bringing leading innovators together in order to build Atlanta’s wireless industry ecosystem. In the third quarter meeting, council members had the chance to hear from Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST, IBM Watson IoT and The Bridge.
Faye DiMassimo, general manager at Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST, shared insights on the ATL Smart Corridor pilot North Avenue project. The project will deploy more than 100 connected devices designed to establish a scalable smart city platform and demonstrate autonomous vehicle capabilities. The North Avenue corridor project is on the leading edge of attempting to improve traffic flow and reduce vehicle accidents by leveraging data. It is important to note that in an effort to tap new ideas and talent, the gathered data is open for companies to analyze and test.
Recognized as a global city based on connectivity and population diversity, Atlanta is also a global city when it comes to technology application advancements. The Weather Company has developed some of the most-used mobile apps and innovative technologies directly impacting public safety around the world. Chris Huff, vice president of mobile and consumer app development at The Weather Channel, presented to the council on IBM Watson’s mesh alerts and solution application that sends push notifications without an internet or data connection. This advancement will provide mobile alert capabilities to some of the world’s most decently populated cities with the most extreme weather conditions.
With innovation advancement comes opportunities to connect the entrepreneurial community to major global markets. Anthony Newstead, program lead with The Coca-Cola Company, discussed how The Bridge has redesigned the traditional accelerator platform by not taking equity in a start-up in exchange for early-stage support, but providing access for founders to directly apply innovative solutions to company’s challenges to experience first-hand how to market products and deploy solutions.
In closing, the council received an update from ATL.IoT’s working group leads and a fast pitch from SiteWhere’s Managing Partner Martin Weber.
As city centers continue to see an increase in population, smart city initiatives and connected devices are more important than ever. With a data centric approach, the city of Atlanta is focused on addressing equity and increasing economic development opportunities throughout our region. With Atlanta being named one of America’s ‘Tech 25’ and top five in U.S. cities population increase, it is key to build a collaborative environment for both public and private organizations.
The next IoT/Mobile Leadership Council meeting will be held Wednesday, November 29, at the Metro Atlanta Chamber.
