This morning several members of the MAC Policy team attended the unveiling of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Statue, which now stands on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW and Capitol Ave SW. This location on the Georgia State Capitol’s lawn was chosen to overlook where Martin Luther King Jr. grew up, as well as to honor Atlanta’s pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement.
Many State and Federal Georgia Leadership members were in attendance, showing their support and admiration. The Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, the Honorable David Ralston, credited the Honorable Calvin Smyre, Chairman of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Tribute and Georgia House Representative, and his team for making this memorial possible. Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Governor Nathan Deal also commended Representative Smyre, the memorial designers, and the Capitol Arts Standards Commission for their involvement.
The closing remarks were given by the Reverend Bernice King, CEO of the King Center and daughter to Martin Luther King Jr. She gave a passionate speech thanking the City for their support and urged attendees to continue working toward equality. With teary eyes and cheerful voices, the Honorable Nathan Deal, First Lady Sandra Deal, The King Family, and Martin Dawe unveiled the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Statue.
