On August 15, 2017, MAC attended the Georgia Chamber's 2017 Congressional Luncheon at the Macon Marriott City Center. Bill Linginfelter, the 2017 Chair of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce called the event to order, followed by U.S. Congressman Austin Scott’s welcome. Karen Handel delivered the invocation, praying for the Charlottesville, Virginia community, which would be reflected on further by the keynote speaker, U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, and U.S. Congressman Buddy Carter.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Larry J. Sabato, began his presentation with his strong disapproval of the Charlottesville events. He then shared his analysis of contributing factors surrounding the result of the presidential election, and ended with a forecast of what the United States might look like in future years.
Following Sabato, U.S Senator Johnny Isakson expressed his disapproval in the Charlottesville events, memorably stating “If an event like this happens in Virginia, it didn’t just happen in Virginia – it happened in the United States.” U.S. Congressman Buddy Carter followed Senator Isakson with the closing remarks. He, having children living in Virginia, emphasized his concern and prayers for the community and those grieving in Virginia. Lastly, Congressman Carter closed the ceremony by noting some great accomplishments happening within Georgia timber, agriculture, and the Savannah and Brunswick ports.
