ATLANTA – A new disease-specific nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals and families with Lewy body dementia is locating its headquarters in Atlanta.
“This association joins a long list of non-profits that call Atlanta home,” said Sam A. Williams, president of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. “That’s because Atlanta has everything they need—access to a great international airport, a world-class medical research community, and a strong community of nonprofit peers.”
Atlanta continues to be a prime destination for companies, researchers, and associations focusing on disease-specific research, diagnosis and treatment.
“The Lewy body dementias are second only to Alzheimer's in the cause of degenerative dementia in the elderly in the United States - affecting over 1.5 million individuals and their families,” said Bob DeBusk, CEO, Lewy Body Dementia Association.
“While we reviewed many fine metropolitan areas throughout the United States, it was Atlanta we felt afforded us the best combination of resources that would give our emerging organization a competitive edge to grow. We have not been disappointed. Assistance from the Metro Atlanta Chamber, Georgia Center for Nonprofits, The Foundation Center, Georgia Society of Association Executives, local businesses and our fellow nonprofit organizations has been both timely and generous.”
“Raising awareness about Lewy Body Dementia among healthcare providers is a priority for LBDA,” says Deborah Hackman, member of the national Board of Directors for the Lewy Body Dementia Association and CEO of the Georgia Nurses Association. “All dementias are not Alzheimer’s, and the appropriate drug regimen to treat Lewy Body Dementia is not the same. In fact, some medications used to treat Alzheimer’s patients are problematic in that they have debilitating affects for Lewy Body patients.”
The Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) www.lewybodydementia.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the Lewy body dementias (LBD), supporting patients, their families and caregivers, and promoting scientific advances. The Association's purposes are charitable, educational, and scientific. Contact the Association at 404.935.6444 or lbda@lbda.org
