The 2005 A+ Awards Luncheon was held on Friday, April 1 at the Georgia World Congress Center in the Georgia Ballroom. This year’s ceremony was attended by more than 980 guests. The A+ Awards is sponsored by the Atlanta Partners for Education (APFE), a joint venture between Atlanta Public Schools and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Each year APFE honors the outstanding partnerships between the Atlanta business community, nonprofit, civic, higher education, religious, social, and professional organizations and their commitment and efforts to directly strengthen the Atlanta Public Schools educational goals.
Awards were presented in the categories of: Community Achievement, Innovation, Mentoring, Rookie Achievement, Team, Tutoring and Summa Cum Laude. Also this year, for the first time, a special recognition was given by the Superintendent for outstanding service in a partnership. This event also recognizes the Atlanta Public Schools Teachers of the Year. The 2005 event highlighted the Teachers of the Year by adding some special touches. The teachers were celebrated with a pre-luncheon reception. They were additionally recognized with special seating that made them the center of attention at the luncheon.
In the lobby of the ballroom, an exhibition entitled “Gallery of Excellence” chronicled Atlanta Public Schools’ academic strides over the past five years including plans and goals for the future. Entertainment was provided by the Bronze Voices Hand Bell Choir, The Young Middle School Jazz Band and the North Atlanta High School Jazz Ensemble.
Jocelyn Dorsey, Director of Editorials & Public Affairs and host of People to People for WSB TV Channel 2, served as Mistress of Ceremonies at this year’s event.
