Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre A Rising Star for the Region’s Economy

While there is much ado about the potential impact on cultural life by the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre (Cobb Energy Centre), the venue’s role in boosting economic growth won’t exactly be second fiddle.

According to estimates by KPMG, the financial services company hired by the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority to perform an economic impact study, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre will create, directly and indirectly, 1,520 area jobs during the construction period and 2,840 jobs for the state of Georgia.

“The potential economic ripple effect of the project affirms our vision of a superior entertainment and cultural venue that plays an important part in the economic growth and development of the area,” said Earl Smith, Chairman of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority.

A performing arts centre for the area was first conceived in a feasibility study in the late 1980s. The venue’s potential long-term economic impact is equally impressive, according to KPMG. Once operational, Cobb Energy Centre’s total impact on spending is projected at $27.3 million during its first year and $38.4 million by the year 2010, KPMG said. The centre’s impact on earnings is projected to be $11.3 million its first year and $16 million by 2010.

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre — the first major performing arts facility built in metro Atlanta in four decades—promises to be one of the most spectacular performance theaters in the country. The facility’s state-of-the-art stage systems and design features will delight performers and audiences, and support sweeping artistic programming—from Broadway productions, opera and ballet to concerts, corporate events and community theater.

Chamber Names Terry Chastain VP of Government Affairs

The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce has promoted Terry Chastain to vice president of government affairs. Chastain assumed his new title on July 17.

"Terry knows how to build consensus so people want to work with him," said John Yates, a partner with the law firm Morris, Manning & Martin LLP and chair of the Chamber's political action committee, known as MAC PAC. "That's critical because the kinds of issues the region is dealing with now require a lot of partners to work together."

The internship project was in partnership with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and ajcjobs.

“When the mayor called, we answered – because nothing is more important to the future of our region than a well-educated, well-trained workforce,” said Michael D. Garrett, 2006 chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and president and CEO of Georgia Power Company. “I want to congratulate all the companies and organizations that signed up. When we invest in these students, we invest in our future.”
