Greater Grady Task Force Releases Final Recommendations

Should the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority commit to creating a new nonprofit board to govern Grady Memorial Hospital , leaders of the Greater Grady Task Force said July 13 that they are confident they can recruit high-profile leaders to serve on that board.

“Grady's major problems can be resolved starting with a new governance structure,” said A.D. “Pete” Correll, former chairman of Georgia-Pacific and co-chair of the Greater Grady Task Force. “If the authority is ready to take this all-important first step, the task force is ready and willing -- if asked -- to personally recruit a board of highly effective and committed community leaders to serve on such a board.”

Chamber Testifies for Delta Route Case

The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, leading a 14-state campaign in support of Delta Air Lines' bid for Atlanta-Shanghai passenger service, submitted testimony on July 16 as part of Delta's filing to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).  The full text of the testimony is available at http://www.metroatlantachamber.com/images/ChinaTestimonyofMACOC.pdf

In a combined statement, Metro Atlanta Chamber Chairman Dick Anderson and President Sam A. Williams emphasized the essential role direct air routes play in building global commerce.

"Atlanta is the economic heart of the Southeast, one of the fastest growing regions in the United States, and yet does not have direct access to China," stated Anderson and Williams.  "An award to Delta for a daily nonstop Atlanta-Shanghai flight will create a new U.S. gateway to China from an unserved region of the United States."

Georgia's Economic Future in Jeopardy Unless We Fix Transportation

Transportation is the No. 1 issue affecting Georgia 's and metro Atlanta 's economic future, according to Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce President Sam A. Williams, who testified before a joint House/Senate committee on transportation funding on June 11 in Savannah.

"Georgia's economic future is in jeopardy unless we fix transportation," Williams said in his testimony.

"Georgia is the fourth-fastest-growing state, yet we are fourth from the bottom in transportation funding. The situation is dire."
