Driver’s License & Tag Information

Drivers's License
To drive in the state of Georgia, you must have a valid Georgia license or a valid out-of-state license. In most cases you can drive in Georgia if you have a valid driver’s license from another country. New Georgia residents must apply for a Georgia driver’s license within 30 days. All other licenses must be surrendered before issuance of a Georgia license. Persons ages 18 or older who surrender a valid out-of-state license will be required to successfully pass an eye examination. If you surrender an expired out-of-state license, or if you are 18 or younger, you must successfully pass an eye examination, road rules test, road signs test and a driving test. Persons with a valid out-of-state driver’s license are required to prove Georgia residency and pass a vision test.

Driver’s License fee:

$15 (reduced rate for organ donor: $8) Cash or money order only

Minimum driving age:

16 Students who drop out of high school before they are 18 years old are not permitted a driver’s license without a parent’s permission.

Learner’s permit fee:

$10 Cash or money order only

Learner’s permit age:

15 To locate the driver’s license office in your county, consult the blue pages of the telephone directory or call the Georgia Department of Public Safety at
(404) 657-9300 or visit www.dmvs.ga.gov.

TAGS

Take the following to your respective county office to obtain a Georgia license tag:

  • Current registration
  • Title of car or name and address of lien holder or copy of lease agreement.
  • Emission certificate: proof that any post-1975 gasoline-powered car has passed the state-approved test. (This is not necessary in all 20 counties.)
  • Proof of insurance.

The $20 tag fee and an ad valorem tax (property tax based on value of vehicle) by county establishes the fee for tag renewal. To locate the license tag office in your county, call the office of your county or residence listed in the “Around the Region” section of this guide beginning on Page 108 or visit the Georgia Department of Public Safety at
(404) 657-9300 or visit www.dmvs.ga.gov.

You must register to vote at least 30 days before an election. Voters also must carry a valid ID to polling locations when they vote. Many counties have several voter registration stations. To find the one nearest you, call the office of your county of residence listed in the ”Around the Region” section of this guide beginning on Page 106. You also may register to vote when you obtain your driver’s license.

Personal Taxes

Metro Atlanta residents are subject to three major taxes: property, sales and use, and Georgia personal income. The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce publishes a complete six-page fold-out document outlining the tax rates for all of Atlanta’s 20 counties and provides sample calculations and tax commissioners addresses for each. Call (404) 586 8403 to order a copy of the “Personal Taxes” brochure.
