Since the building of the Georgia International Horse Park (GIHP) for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, Rockdale County’s annual economic impact from tourism has risen from $5 million to nearly $100 million. Named a City of Excellence by the Georgia Municipal Association, Rockdale’s only incorporated city, Conyers, recently completed a revitalization project to create a pedestrian-friendly city center. Its historic buildings now are filled with shops and restaurants, and thousands of area residents congregate for annual happenings such as a Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, Olde Towne Fall Festival and Hometown Holiday festivities.
