More than 300 bioscience companies have operations in metro Atlanta. This number includes domestic headquarters and operations for major companies such as CIBA Vision, Kimberly-Clark, Solvay, UCB Pharma, CR Bard, Elekta, Styker and Merial. Emerging companies such as CardioMEMS, Altea Therapeutics, GeoVax, Given Imaging and Inhibitex have attracted national attention and are leading the way in innovative approaches to improving patient outcomes.
Bioscience companies employ more than 17,000 workers in Metro Atlanta. According to the Batelle Memorial Institute, Metro Atlanta is among the top 20 metros for employment in medical devices and equipment with over 4,300 workers in the field. The area also ranks among the top 20 metros for employment in research, testing, and medical laboratories with over 5,100 workers.
With almost 150 companies, including the world’s leader, McKesson Technology Solutions, and the #1 ranking for healthcare IT company revenues, Atlanta is the nation's health IT capital and is at the forefront of consumer digital health. A recent study showed that the Georgia-based health IT sector employs some 15,000 people in the state and the sector’s primary businesses are growing at a 40 percent rate.
